About Me
Becoming a teacher is a relatively recent decision for me. I had to retire from my previous line of work, and decided that I wanted to do something that would make a difference in society. My mother was a teacher, and is someone I truly admire. After considering my options, I decided I wanted to follow in her footsteps and become a high school teacher.
I have lots of experience teaching kids in many different areas. I am an assistant coach with the boys varsity soccer team. I was a graduate teaching assistant during the second year of my first master's degree, and had to teach some freshman classes from time to time. I then became a long-term substitute teacher at Woodlawn HS (If you listened to the Serial Podcast, it's that school) in Baltimore, MD for two years. In that time, I taught nine months of Technology Education, eight months of sophomore Social Studies, five months of Algebra II and two months of choir. Woodlawn was a wakeup call for me, this was where I got my first taste of what it meant to make a difference in children's lives. After that, I taught a series of after-school and summer musical theater camps to elementary and middle school children in Columbia, MD. I also have two sons, Benny and Jack, aged four and two years old.
Most of my spare time is spent with my family, though I have lots of hobbies and outside interests. I am a lifelong soccer player and fan. I play whenever I can, and I have half-season tickets for the Timbers and full season tickets for the Thorns. I did my BA in Music at OSU, and I have a Master's Degree from the Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory of Music in Operatic Voice. I worked as a professional actor/singer for four years in musical theater, performing in 10+ shows, totaling more than 750 performances. As amazing as it was, doing eight shows per week made parenting very difficult. Since my oldest son was starting preschool, I decided to get out of theater on my own terms, and my family moved back home to Portland. I'd like to go back to the stage at some point, but now is not the time.
Going into teaching has given me a chance to go back to one of my earlier passions: mathematics. Math is everywhere, and plays a part in everything we do. I feel it is my duty as a teacher to not only explain how these mathematical processes work, but also why it is important that we know them. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to impart my knowledge and passion to today's youth.
